The conference will take place in the Sandyford Building on Northumbria University’s City Campus West, just adjacent to the Civic Centre in Newcastle city centre (number 19 on the City Campus map).
How to get there:
Travel in Newcastle:
Within Newcastle, the Metro system connect most parts of Newcastle, and the best stop to get to our conference venue is Haymarket (two stops away from Newcastle Central Station). Newcastle airport is also served by the Metro. See the Tyne and Wear Metro website for details on stops and timetables. Depending on traffic and the time of day, a taxi from Central Station to Northumbria University will cost between £8-15. Newcastle’s city centre is eminently walkable, however – from the station to campus it is roughly a 25-minute walk at a leisurely pace.
Newcastle is very well connected via the East Coast main line. This is served by CrossCountry Trains, Northern Rail, and London and North East Railways (LNER). The cheapest option is usually to book direct online.
Newcastle has its own international airport, though direct flights there are fairly limited. Those of you travelling from abroad may find it easier to fly to Edinburgh if there is no direct connection to Newcastle airport: in Edinburgh, the Airlink 100 airport bus takes you straight from Edinburgh airport to Waverley railway station, and then it is a pleasant 1 ½ hour train ride down to Newcastle, along the beautiful Northumberland coast (make sure to sit on the left hand side facing the direction of travel to get the best views!). An alternative is Manchester airport. The train from Manchester to Newcastle takes 2.5 to 3 hours, and there are plenty of direct connections.
We do not recommend any particular hotel, and as the conference takes place during term time, we will unfortunately be unable to offer accommodation on campus. However, Newcastle has an abundance of hotels that are good value for money, and any Newcastle city centre hotel will be within easy walking distance of both Newcastle Central station and our campus. The following list is by no means comprehensive! Good mid-range options are the Hampton by Hilton Hotel (Baron House Neville St, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5EN) directly opposite the station, and Hotel Indigo (2 Fenkle St, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5XU). A pleasant budget option is the new Motel One (15-25 High Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 1EW), also in the city centre, and the Premier Inn in The Gate (95 Newgate St, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5RF) is also particularly well situated for reaching the conference venue.
