This website is dedicated to a conference on writers’ and intellectuals’ contributions to debates around British relations to Europe between 1918 and the present. The conference was held in Newcastle upon Tyne on 1 and 2 November 2018 with generous support from UACES: The academic association for contemporary European studies, from Northumbria University and from Northumbria’s Institute of Humanities.
Please watch this space for further announcements on the Special Collection of the Open Library of Humanities to emerge from this conference, and for audio recordings of the conference keynotes and round table discussion.
‘Europe, taken as a whole, is […] an unknown quantity to most of her inhabitants, nurtured in the disastrous tradition of the armed and insular state’. (Robert Byron, Europe in the Looking-Glass, 1926)
